About Us
About
The Affrilachian Arts Institute (AAI) deploys a framework of Art, Land and History to uplift Black Artists within Appalachia. We use history and creative practices to disrupt and replace the dominant narrative of the region we call home. AAI strengthens the sense of belonging to place and culture for Black Artists while providing them opportunities to thrive, mentally, physically and creatively, here in Appalachia.
Our work is just beginning and includes: cultivating a network of Affrilachian artists; Supporting them in development, workshopping and presenting of their art; Codifying through the history of Affrilachians in this place and space, and producing groundbreaking Affrilachian musical and theatrical productions to share these stories.
Affrilachian Artists need safe places to gather, create and thrive. Currently, Appalachia lacks the infrastructure, leadership and resources to uplift and engage this community.
Our Mission
Our Mission is to uplift a new generation of Black Artists in Appalachia. The Affrilachian Arts Institute utilizes history and creative practices to disrupt the dominant narrative of the region we call home. We strive to strengthen the sense of belonging to place and culture for Black Artists.
Our Values
Collectively, the Institute's core elements — artistic engagement, safe and enriching place to create, and a holistic understanding of history – repair/address generational trauma and institutional racism. Importantly, these elements have been gatekept from our community. The Institute will pave artistic career pathways to upward mobility for Affrilachians here at home. And, it will increase their sense of belonging and provide a safe and supportive environment here. Importantly, the Institute will enrich the larger community of Appalachia by bringing to light the historical contributions and current voices/talents of Affrilachians.
